Get to know our intern, Thomas Siegenthaler, and his experience at Mechanics Bank.

My experience at Mechanics has been incredibly enriching and educational. Starting at the Ontario Office, as a Customer Service Representative, was an excellent introduction, allowing me to learn and understand the customer service side of the bank. In just under a month, I was able to work independently on the teller line, thanks to the dynamic training and support from the entire Ontario staff. Transitioning into commercial lending has been great, shifting my focus to the business side of banking.

I was working with the credit analysis team learning about the underwriting process, which has broadened my understanding of credit assessment and risk management in commercial finance.

Another project that I was working on for the department was researching the potential change in the commercial lending loan origination system. This opportunity has allowed me to delve into the intricacies of financial technology, gaining hands-on experience in evaluating software, looking at both the risks and benefits, and understanding the impact of technological advancement on efficiency and customer service.

Overall, my internship at Mechanics has provided me with a comprehensive perspective on many aspects of the financial sector. The exposure to commercial lending and the underwriting process has been particularly valuable, laying a foundation for my future career aspirations in finance. I am extremely grateful for the opportunity to learn and grow in such a dynamic and supportive environment.

After concluding my internship this summer, I will be spending the fall semester in Rome, Italy studying the economics of the European Union. I am thrilled to expand my understanding of economic activities and witness firsthand how different countries approach their economies. Beyond academics, I am looking forward to immersing myself in the cultures and traditions of Italy. Following my time in Rome, I will return to Denison University in Granville, Ohio to complete my junior year and continue my studies in economics.
